I’m excited to finally be sharing this DIY Dollar Tree Snowman with you this morning. I debuted my finished snowmen last week on Instagram and the love I received for them was overwhelming. I know why…They are pretty darn cute!

I had a feeling my DIY snowman decorations might be popular, so I pulled out my tripod right before sitting down to put them together. I’m grateful I had the inkling to do so because my Instagram family went nuts and demanded a tutorial on how to make them.

I should warn you, my video is anything but polished. I’m literally sitting on my family room floor, watching television, and crafting away. For me, this is my ideal crafting situation! It helps make the time go by faster and you can kill two birds with one stone. By two birds I mean, getting the craft at hand done while also catching up on all your garbage t.v. AKA The Real Housewives. You know you do the same thing, don’t you?!

What materials will you need to make these DIY snowman decorations?

Plastic bowls: The entire structure of your DIY snowman topiary is made of plastic bowls. You’ll need six of them. Two large, two medium, and two small bowls to be exact. I purchased my bowls from the Dollar Tree. I found them in the entertaining section with all the other party supplies.

You’ll be hot gluing the two coordinating bowls together to create a ball-like shape. Once you have the three balls, you’ll then glue one on top of the other to achieve the snowman form. It’s as easy as that!

Tinsel or Garland: To get that true snowman feeling, I opted to purchase white tinsel from the Dollar Tree to cover my snowman with. I ended up buying the Dollar Tree out of all their white tinsel and found myself having to buy more from Target. As you can imagine, the tinsel was definitely more expensive at Target but you did receive more feet in a package. I couldn’t find the tinsel I got from Target, it’s sold out, but here’s another white tinsel option from Amazon.

I ended up using roughly 100 feet of garland total for one snowman, 200 feet for two completed snowmen. That was the equivalent to about ten 9-foot packages from the Dollar Tree. Note, that this number can change based on the size of the bowls you use and the overall area you’ll need to cover for your own snowman.

Any colored tinsel or regular greenery garland would also work just as well. You can definitely let your creativity run wild here. Pick whatever you feel will fit with your Christmas decor the best!

Snowman Face: I will share what I used to make my snowmen faces, but I encourage you to use what you have on hand to create your own. Because I craft often, I had extra felt lying around to cut out small circles for the eyes. I also had a styrofoam cone to use for the carrot nose. The cone was pure luck! I used orange felt to cover the cone to make it look more like a carrot. *My two cents is to improvise with what you have in your house for this part before spending money!

Snowman scarf and buttons: I used ribbon I already had in the house as well as a cute bow I found at the Dollar Tree. The bows came in a set of two so I used one on each of my two adorable DIY snowmen. Feel free to use fabric, handkerchiefs, ties, or an actual scarf for your own snowman decorations.

Finally, I used actual buttons on my snowmen but feel free to cut out felt or fabric instead. You could even use water bottle caps colored with permanent markers!

6 plastic bowls (2 large, 2 medium, 2 small), tinsel/garland (I chose white but the sky’s the limit here), felt/material (for the eyes and to cover the nose), styrofoam cone (for the nose), buttons, ribbon and/or bow (for the scarf)

Tools: You will also need a good pair of scissors and a hot glue gun with a ton of glue sticks.

Begin by hot gluing your two large bowls together to form a circle. I originally tried making it all the way around the top of the bowl with the hot glue but I noticed that where I started ended up drying before I was able to close the two bowls together.

To fix this, I went around the entire outside seam where the two bowls meet with the hot glue gun and secured the bowls together. Because you will be covering the bowls with the tinsel, it’s okay if you see the glue after using your hot glue gun.

With all three of your balls now made, you can start hot gluing them together to create your snowman structure. The large circle is the base, the medium circle is for the middle, and the smaller circle is the top of the snowman. To make sure the entire structure was secure, I also went around with the hot glue gun again to add more reinforcement around the edges of each layer.

Now that the structure of the snowman is complete, it’s time to cover it with your tinsel or garland. I started at the bottom of the snowman and attached one end of the tinsel with hot glue to the base. In a circular motion, wrap the tinsel or garland around the base making sure to use hot glue to secure it in place. Start at the bottom and work up to the top layer of the snowman making sure to cover it completely.

Caution: The glue is hot, hence the name hot glue, so be very careful when securing your tinsel or garland.

All that’s left to do is add the face and clothes to your snowman. I shared the details of what I used for this above. My advice here is to just use whatever you can find in your house. I am lucky that I craft often and had everything here in the house to finish up my snowmen.

One thing I wanted to mention about the styrofoam nose is that I cut it at a little bit of a diagonal before hot gluing it to my DIY snowman. I think it looks more like a carrot to have it pointed to either the right or left as opposed to straight on. That of course, is just personal preference!
