DIY Fall Signs For Your Home

Happy Fall from sunny Florida where it’s 90 plus degrees and you can cut the humidity with a knife. Unfortunately for us Floridians, fall isn’t much of a season. No changing of leaves or crisp weather to document here…

Knowing all this, it’s no wonder that every year I find it hard to transition from summer to fall. It’s always a struggle to find the motivation to change up my decor or start embracing Pumpkin Spice Everything when all I want to do is be in my bathing suit 24/7 enjoying the lake life.

Earlier this week, I attempted to trick myself into the fall spirit. I started my morning off making my homemade Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew (It’s AMAZING!) and headed to my favorite Dollar Tree in hopes of finding some fall inspiration.

After spending $45 at Dollar Tree, I’m happy to report I found the inspiration I needed to get my creative fall juices finally flowing. Hooray! I have quite a few fall craft ideas on the docket to share with you in the upcoming weeks which I’m super excited about. You should be excited too! Just saying…

For today, I wanted to start off with a simple DIY fall sign using canvas frames I found at the Dollar Tree. They’re super easy to make, and once you know the process, you can customize them to your liking. You can even make them for any season or holiday.

So without further ado, let’s get to crafting friends!

Dollar Tree Fall Signs

You’ll need:

  • Canvas frames (I picked up various sized frames to work with but ultimately ended up using a 6×8 and 5×7 canvas with wooden frame)
  • Paint or Stain
  • Brushes
  • Vinyl lettering or letter stickers
  • Hot glue or craft glue
  • Staple remover
  • Scissors
  • Embellishments such as leaves, pumpkins, insects, googly eyes

Begin by removing the staples from the canvas.

This will then leave you with a wooden frame and detached canvas.

Using your scissors, cut along the seam of the innermost rectangle.

Trim the edges of the rectangle ever so slightly so the canvas sits perfectly on the wooden frame without going over the sides.

Put your cut-out canvas piece aside and paint your wooden frame. You can paint your wooden frames a color or stain them. It’s totally up to you! I went with one black and one white frame for my fall signs.

While the frames are drying, it’s time to start designing what you want to put on your canvases. I used my Cricut machine to create wording for my fall signs. (I used “The Skinny” and “Cami Rae” fonts for my wording)

If you don’t have a die-cutting machine, you can absolutely still do this project! Take a trip to your local craft store and purchase letter stickers in the font you like. You can also buy additional graphic stickers such as pumpkins, apples, leaves, etc.

Arrange your saying and graphics on your canvas. It’s important that you press down firmly and rub on your decals or stickers to the best of your ability. This will help you create a crisp line with minimal bleeding once you add your paint.

*Tip: Once I added my decals to the canvas, I used white paint (the color of the canvas) and painted over the design. I then let it dry before applying my colored coat of paint. This is an additional step that isn’t necessarily needed but it helps provide a really crisp line around your design.

Next paint over the entire surface of the canvas using your color of choice.

Allow your canvas to dry completely before removing your decals from the surface. I did a good job at waiting for my Halloween DIY sign to dry completely as you can see below.

I didn’t do so well waiting for the fall sign to dry though. As you can see, there were some places where the paint actually came off the canvas because my lack of patience got the best of me. Don’t be like me. Let your masterpiece dry completely!

Using a hot glue gun or crafting glue, reattach the newly designed canvas to your painted wooden frame.

You could easily stop right here but being extra is something I pride myself in so I had to add some embellishments on both of my DIY fall signs.

For the Halloween DIY sign, I added some twine, googly eyes, and bugs. I can’t wait to add it to my Halloween tiered tray that I keep on my bar area. I think it will be perfect on it!

For the more generic fall sign, I added a few fall leaves and a pumpkin that I happened to have leftover from last year. I’m waiting patiently for my local feed store to get in their decorative hay so I can fix up my front porch area. This is what my fall front porch looked like last year. I think this new sign will work nicely somewhere in this motif.

    1. Please steal it!! It’s so darn easy. And I’m sure you’ll have the perfect lettering…unlike mine with the paint peeling!
