From elaborate full-blown trees the size of their Christmas counterparts to tiny tabletop options, Halloween trees are currently trending BIG TIME in the world of seasonal decorating. I personally jumped on the Halloween tree bandwagon last year and bought a cute spooky tree to add to my Halloween mantle decor. I just couldn’t help myself!

Being new to Halloween tree decorating, I went super simple last year and added some pencil erasers I found at Target as ornaments. I can be pretty resourceful when I need to be! This year, with these Halloween Christmas trees becoming more popular, I knew the erasers weren’t going to cut it.

I needed to step up my Halloween tree decorations! At the same time, I didn’t want to spend a fortune doing it. You can buy some pretty cute ornaments at local craft stores and even on Etsy, but I wasn’t willing to pay that much for a Halloween ornament that I knew wouldn’t be on display for an extended amount of time.

So what was a girl to do? To get my creative juices flowing, I started by going shopping in my own craft room. I’ve recently trained myself to do this prior to going out and spending a fortune at Michaels or Joann‘s. I can’t tell you the amount of money I’ve wasted over the years buying and rebuying craft supplies I already have on hand. It’s frustrating!

After a quick look in my craft room, I found some Halloween stickers as well as some leftover Halloween ribbon from one of my previous Pinterest parties. I knew they could definitely be useful in making decorations for my Halloween tree.

I now had my starting point so my next order of business was to take a trip to my local Dollar Tree to see what I could find. I’d seen so many of my Instagram friends sharing their recent Dollar Tree finds and one item that I noticed everyone stocking up on were plastic ornament snow globes for Christmas.

That’s when I got the idea. What if I took those same snow globes and made Halloween ornaments instead?! Lucky for me, my Dollar Tree was completely stocked up with everything for Christmas including boxes full of the snow globe ornaments. I was beyond excited and grabbed myself four of them.

I continued down the aisles looking for mini Halloween pieces to add inside the globes to make a Halloween scene. I was able to find some wooden witch hats and some foam bats too. With the Halloween stickers and ribbon I already pulled out at home, I was sure I had enough to make some adorable homemade Halloween tree decorations.

With everything purchased, I decided to dedicate this past Sunday to All Things Halloween. My son, Zach, invited his girlfriend over and I had fun Halloween activities planned for them to partake in. We made Halloween tie-dye cookies, haunted Halloween gingerbread houses, and then finished off with making these DIY Halloween tree ornaments.

Who said teenagers were too old to do these kinds of activities?! I sure didn’t! I love doing these seasonal crafts with my teenager. It’s so awesome as a parent to sit back and watch your tween or teen create their own product from start to finish. They honestly need minimal help.

For our day of Halloween fun, my role was pretty basic. I obviously had bought the supplies ahead of time so that part was taken care of. In addition to that, I gave a couple of ideas to the kids along the way to help spark some creativity. That’s all I did! That left me the ability to photograph and record the kids doing the activities so I could share them with you. It was a win/win for everyone!

Of course, you can do these ornaments with your younger kids too but they will definitely need some assistance. We used a hot glue gun to make these homemade Halloween tree decorations and I never trust little hands alone with them. Let’s be truthful here…I’m even scared to use one of them on my own!

You’ll want to start by unscrewing the cap of your snow globe or jar. This is the base of your Halloween tree ornament and where you will be adding the majority of your mini Halloween pieces.

We took some Halloween ribbon and hot glued it around the perimeter of the lid to give it more of a Halloween vibe. The ⅜ inch ribbon fits perfectly around the Dollar Tree snow globe lid.

To add a little bit of height as well as a Halloween feel, we hot glued cotton balls to the bottom of the lid.

From there, it’s time to start hot gluing your Halloween scene to your base. This is where your creativity can run wild! The one important thing to remember, however, is that you’re going to need to screw your cap back on after creating your Halloween snow globe ornament. I recommend that you test that you can put the top back periodically throughout the process.

The kids had such a great time making these. I set no limits on them other than to have fun.

These two were just a hodgepodge of all the materials I laid out for them. They used some of everything to put these two together.

We added all four of them to the Halloween tree and just sat back and admired our work. Well, not my work, but the kid’s work. You know what I mean!

  1. Oh my goodness! This is the cutest Halloween tree I’ve ever seen! I love your snow-globe ornaments–I’ve got to get to the Dollar Store and see if we have any. They are darling–did you also make some for Christmas? If so, I’d love to see them. Such a clever idea—and the best part—it seems all the parts come from the Dollar Store! Thank you for another great post!
