Is anyone else in disbelief that this is the last weekend of 2017? The older I get, the quicker time just flies by. Wasn’t Zach just born? How can he be a Freshman in high school? Patrick and I celebrated our 15th year anniversary this year as well. Seriously where does the time go! Before this year is completely behind us, I wanted to share some of my favorite things from 2017. Maybe some of these things made your list as well.
My Favorite Books
Watch Me Disappear By Janelle Brown
Suspense, suspense, suspense! Oh my goodness. I literally couldn’t read this book fast enough. The story is about a woman, Billie Flanagan, who is a Mom and wife that goes off on a hiking trip alone and never returns. They never find her or her body. Billie’s daughter, Olive, starts seeing visions of her mother and she begins thinking she is still alive. Is she alive? Is she dead? You’ll be on the edge of your seat the whole time while reading this one, promise.
What Light By Jay Asher
If this author’s name sounds familiar to you it’s for a good reason. Jay Asher is the author of the book, 13 Reasons Why which caused a ton of controversy this year when Netflix made it into a television series. No controversy this time though. This book, What Light, has nothing at all to do with teen suicide. It’s all about “Young Love” and a Christmas tree farm. Interesting combination, don’t you think?
I had the pleasure of listening to Jay Asher speak earlier this year at a Media Specialist conference when I was still working as a teacher. I must admit that being a teacher and Media Specialist has made me very partial to Young Adult books. This is definitely a good read and shows you a completely different side to Jay Asher as an author. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it for mature middle schoolers and older.
My Favorite Song
“That’s What I Like” By Bruno Mars
Not a ton to say about this song other than it’s AMAZING. I think I played this song at least a million times this year, and surprisingly, I’m still not tired of it!
My Favorite Show
The Big Bang Theory
This was a tough one for me to narrow down. The Big Bang Theory is a show my whole family watches together and we just love it. The things that come out of Sheldon’s mouth are hilarious. And speaking of Sheldon, the new spinoff show about him, Young Sheldon, is also a good one we are enjoying these days. Gives you a good insight into Sheldon’s life in the early years.
My Favorite Movie
Have you seen Hidden Figures? It’s a movie about three brilliant African-American women who worked for NASA in the 1960’s. These ladies, who were all talented mathematicians, served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history, the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, during a time when Russia and the US were competing in the “Space Race”. The movie was based on a true story and it is one that will have you laughing, cheering, crying and everything in between. A must see!
I absolutely loved the live-action Beauty and the Beast movie that came out this year. Was anyone else amazed how well they did depicting the characters and basically the entire ambiance of the cartoon version? Wow! I felt like a little kid in awe of everything on the screen. Loved it!
My Favorite Concert
Patrick and I have always enjoyed listening and dancing to music. Our son Zach not only enjoys listening and dancing, but he is a musician who can play multiple instruments including trombone, drums, guitar, bass, ukulele, and most recently, the trumpet. We love music in our home and appreciate all different genres. We listen to everything from jazz, to country, to rap, to some good ol’ Rock and Roll.
This year I was fortunate to attend multiple concerts but my favorite, by far, was Bruno Mars’ concert for his 24K Magic album. If he is coming to a city near you anytime soon you HAVE to go. We literally began dancing the minute Bruno started singing and never stopped the entire concert. What I loved most about the concert was the fact that all ages, from teens to 70’s (and I’m not exaggerating), were all there having a blast. It’s one big party and you don’t want to miss it!
My Favorite Vacation
This was also a hard one for me because I had two really great trips this year that stand out in my mind. One was a family cruise we took in July to Hawaii and another was a trip Patrick and me took to New Orleans to celebrate our 15th Wedding Anniversary. Because we did it all together as a family, I would have to say my favorite vacation was our Hawaiian cruise though.
I’m not going to lie, it’s always been a dream of mine to travel to Hawaii. We flew to Honolulu and boarded our cruise ship there. We traveled to all four major Hawaiian islands and got to see so much of Hawaii. I highly recommend taking a cruise around the islands because you get a better understanding of each of them. They are all so unique and I enjoyed them for completely different reasons. I’d love to go back to Maui. I can already see myself drinking out of a pineapple on the beach…
My Favorite Phone App, well Apps, since I use them together
I’ve recently been downloading quite a few apps on my iPhone to help me with my website. I came across two apps that I really have come to love and use on a daily basis. Snapseed and Afterlight are apps I use to clean up my pictures before adding them to my blog. You can add filters, remove blemishes, and even resize your images. These have been a lifesaver for me since I’m not the best photographer. But I’m working on it, people!
I could go on and on for hours about all of my favorite things from 2017. It was such a great year for me and my family. I am grateful for all our successes, struggles and everything else we encountered along the way. What are some of your favorites from 2017? Please let me know in the comments below.
Goodbye, 2017. Here’s to a Happy and Healthy New Year!
What was your favorite post this year from Lake Life State of Mind? Make-Ahead Twice Baked Potato Casserole received the most overall views. You all picked a good one if I do say so myself.
