Halloween is just around the corner and I’m pulling out all the stops when it comes to making this year the best Halloween ever. With the way the world has been going lately, we could all use a distraction from the craziness around us. At least that’s how I’m feeling at the moment!
To have a little fun, and spread some Halloween cheer, I put together three fun activities for my teenage son, Zach, to do this past Sunday. We also invited his girlfriend over so she could embrace the Halloween spirit right along with us!
On Sunday, I asked in my Instagram stories if people were interested in me sharing the activities I put together for Zach. I received an overwhelming response in favor of me sharing what Halloween fun I had planned so I made sure to take tons of pictures and videos of Sunday’s Halloween activities.
I’ve already shared the DIY Halloween Gingerbread Houses and DIY Halloween Tree Ornaments earlier in the week so make sure to take a look at them as soon as you’re finished here.
Both activities were made from start to finish by Zach and his girlfriend, Briana, without any help from me. That’s definitely a perk of doing these types of Halloween activities with tweens and teens because they’re basically independent! You can literally stand back and watch their creative juices flow.
All three of the activities were a huge success, but these Halloween Tie Dye Cookies were my personal favorite to make. I love how they look so fancy and high-end yet they were the simplest cookies to make. These Halloween cookies were made using only two ingredients. Yes, you heard me right, two ingredients! These cookies were made using a store-bought sugar cookie mix and food coloring gel. That’s it!
As I mentioned, I opted to use a sugar cookie dry mix. You could always purchase the premade sugar cookie dough in the refrigerated section of your grocery store for an even easier version of this recipe. Or you could make your own homemade sugar cookie dough…it’s all up to you.
To make these Halloween cookies a little more festive, I used some mini Halloween cookie cutters I found at Joann Fabric. Any type of cookie cutters would work though. And if you don’t have any cookie cutters, use a glass or other object to make circles in your dough. Be resourceful here. We’re just looking for simplicity!
Halloween Tie Dye Cookies
Sugar cookie dough (dry mix, premade, homemade), food coloring (I used neon green, purple, and orange), Halloween cookie cutters
Begin by making your sugar cookie dough. As I mentioned above, we just made our sugar cookies using a dry mix. Feel free to buy already made dough in the refrigerated section or make a homemade sugar cookie recipe if you prefer.
With your sugar cookie dough ready, split your dough into three equal pieces.
Using your food coloring, dye each of your three pieces of dough a different color. The amount of food coloring you use is ultimately up to you. We used about a teaspoon of each because we wanted our three colors to be vibrant.
Next, lay a large piece of parchment paper down on a flat surface. Begin breaking off small pieces of each of the doughs and placing them on the parchment paper you just laid down. You want your pieces to touch.
Make sure there are no gaps in between your dough pieces. You can push down on the dough gently to fill in any small gaps you might have.
Grab another large piece of parchment paper and lay it on top of your dough pieces.
Using a rolling pin, gently start rolling your dough out until the dough is about ¼ of an inch thick.
When you remove the top layer of parchment paper, your sugar cookie dough will now be in a tie-dyed design. Isn’t it so awesome!
Using your Halloween cookie cutters, begin cutting out your Halloween-shaped cookies.
At first, we started cutting our cookies and immediately removing them to our parchment-lined baking sheets. The problem was our cookies started falling apart.
We ultimately ended up using the cookie cutters to make Halloween shapes on all of the dough at one time. Once we finished making the shapes, we removed the extra pieces of dough around them and it seemed to work better for us.
All that’s left to do at this point is transfer your cookies to a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake your Halloween cookies. The temperature and duration of your baking will be based on the dough you’re using so make sure to read the package for those details.
Just so you know, you will end up with a ball of extra sugar cookie dough to do with as you see fit.
The two crazy teens I had with me wanted to use their extra dough to make a giant teddy bear…or at least I think that’s what he was meant to be!
We laughed when we pulled it out of the oven because the gummy worm basically melted giving the “teddy bear” a foaming mouth! We thought it gave the perfect spooky effect. Don’t you think?!
Of course, the “teddy bear” was just a joke! Here’s the final result of our Halloween Tie Dye cookies. They are absolutely, positively, most definitely, the coolest cookies around.
All three of us were obsessed with the way they turned out. We already have plans to make a Christmas-version in the near future so stay tuned. I can’t wait!
These Halloween cookies are seriously the perfect Halloween treats for kids. I would even serve them as Halloween party food if I were throwing a Halloween shindig. However you decide to use these, I hope you enjoy the simplicity of this Halloween dessert!

You’re so sweet! Thank you. Your girls would love making these and as you can see it’s super easy. Have fun!
These look so much easier than the Halloween cookies I made with my grandkids–I love how you dyed the dough then mixed it together and used the cookie cutters then–such a great idea! Loved the monsters Zach and his girlfriend made, too–so clever!
These were so darn easy to make! I definitely will be making a Christmas version as well. We had a such great time whipping them together!
