Heavenly Oreo Trifle. The name says it all. Loaded with Oreo cookies, cream cheese, and fluffy whipped topping. You might think you’re dreaming but I promise you’re not. I’m just that good at finding really great recipes and sharing them with you. Isn’t that one of the many reasons you keep me around?
This past weekend we were invited to our friend’s new house for a BBQ. These are our really special friends who are basically family to us at this point. They’re the ones who we celebrated Friendsgiving with this past fall.
It was just our two families getting together for a relaxing day full of eating, drinking and enjoying each other’s company. The perfect recipe for the perfect day!
As a guest, I never like to go to someone’s house empty-handed and this time wasn’t any different. With our friends buying so much food to grill, the only thing left for me to bring was a dessert. Honestly, that was fine with me because my sweet tooth is pretty big and dessert is kinda “my thing”.
Once I decided on bringing dessert, the question quickly became, “What should I make?” It’s hard to surprise our friends at this point because I have literally made almost every recipe in my arsenal for them. I wanted to do something different than my typical banana pudding trifle or liquor-infused cupcakes.
And then it came to me. Heavenly Oreo Trifle, formerly known as “Oreo Stuff”, is a recipe my mom used to make when I was younger. It’s been such a long time since anyone has made it that I almost forgot I had the recipe. Luckily for me, I am super organized and found the recipe right where I left it eight years ago! Sometimes I love how OCD I can be.
I whipped this Heavenly Oreo Trifle up the day before the get-together and placed it in the freezer to take shape and for the flavors to blend. When we brought it to our friend’s house we left it in their fridge to thaw just enough to be able to scoop into it easily when serving.
So what do I need to make this Heavenly Oreo Trifle?
two 14.3 oz. packages of Oreos, ½ stick butter (softened), 8 oz. cream cheese (softened), 1 cup powdered sugar, 3 ½ cups milk, two 3.4 oz. boxes of instant French Vanilla pudding, 16 oz. whipped topping (thawed)
Begin by stirring the milk and French Vanilla pudding in a large mixing bowl. Set aside.
In a stand-up mixer, combine the softened butter, cream cheese, and powdered sugar. Set aside.
Check the bowl with the pudding to see if it has set. It should look like this.
Once the pudding is set, carefully fold in the whipped topping.
Once the whipped topping and pudding are combined, grab the cream cheese mixture and add the two bowls together.
This is what the final pudding mixture should look like.
Next, empty the two packages of Oreos in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag.
Smash up the cookies into pieces. How much smashing you do is your own personal preference. This is the size I went with.
With all the ingredients ready, it’s time to assemble your trifle.
Begin by scattering a layer of Oreos on the bottom of the trifle bowl.
Carefully pour the pudding mixture on top of the Oreos making sure to cover them completely.
Continue alternating the Oreo and pudding mixture until you get to the top where you will sprinkle the last bit of Oreos for decoration.
I ended up with three layers of Oreos, three layers of pudding mixture, and a sprinkle of Oreos on top. Plus, I had enough to make a personal size container to keep in the freezer for our house. Pretty convenient if I do say so myself!
Like the bbq, the dessert was a success! Why did I ever stop making Heavenly Oreo Trifle? I have no clue but I know I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon. Have a taste for yourself and tell me what you think in the comments below.
