Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

I’m pulling out all the stops here lately, my friend! Whatever creative juices I have floating around in my brain are going to good use at the moment. I’ve been trying desperately to do whatever I can to keep my family happy, healthy and entertained.

Compared to most, I have to admit I am one of the lucky ones in this department. For starters, my husband is still working outside the home so his daily schedule is basically the same. And as far as my teenager, well I only have one and he sleeps until 1 pm every day!

But I would be lying if I said things were picture perfect!

If I had to pinpoint what’s been the hardest thing for our family throughout the past few weeks, I’d have to stress. Yes, my husband still has a job, Thank God, but his job is completely commission-based and 100% dependent on the economy…AHHHH!

And for Zach, he’s a dual enrollment student meaning he is a high schooler taking classes at the local community college. The transition to remote learning has been a scary one for him. Taking Chemistry and Pre Calculus online isn’t the easiest thing in the world. He’s a little overwhelmed with it all.

As the mom and wife of the family, I’m just doing my part to try and keep everyone happy while keeping my own sanity at the same time! I’ve had to put some of my own work on the back burner at times to make sure everyone else is being taken care of. As a nurturer, it actually brings me joy to be able to do it.

That’s not to say I don’t lose my patience from time to time. Or find a way to sneak in the family room to watch reality tv every once in a while. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!

“Family Days” are pretty sacred in our home. With Patrick’s all-consuming job and Zach’s list of neverending list of activities, the few days we are all home together are a big deal. Sadly, there are literally only two days in an entire month that we are all able to be together from the minute we wake up to the minute we go to sleep.

So even before this world of ours turned upside down in what seemed like seconds, our “Family Days” were important to us. During football season, they’re usually spent in Miami tailgating and watching the game. Other times of the year, we go out to the movies, walk around the mall, or spend time on the lake. We’re always doing something extra on “Family Day”.

Knowing that Patrick was off this past Sunday, I knew I had to make the day extra special. My goal was to try and lower our stress-levels all while enjoying each other’s company. We spent the morning adding some new Adirondack chairs to our fire pit area followed by some fun on our friend’s jet ski.

The rest of the day, we organized a family potluck where we picked a theme, created a menu and then each signed up for what we wanted to contribute to the meal. Our theme was a lakeside BBQ so we ate outside under the pergola and enjoyed the beautiful lake view. It was a glorious day! You check it all out here

In addition to being off Sunday, Patrick was scheduled to be home early last night. I immediately started jogging my brain for some more fun ideas to do as a family. As a family who loves games, I thought it would be fun to have a Minute To Win It Family Game Night here in the house. We’ve played these types of games at family holiday parties and have always had a blast so I knew it would be a hit for us.

My biggest challenge was trying to find games that used supplies we already had in our home. I’m trying desperately to follow the social distancing guidelines and didn’t want to make a special trip to the store.

Food for thought If you don’t have everything you need at home right now, add it to your grocery list and grab it on your next adventure out. All these items can be found at your local grocery store, Target or Walmart.

I have also added the supplies under each particular game in the event that you want to pick and choose the games your family wants to play.

Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

Game 1: Post It

Supplies: Post It notes

The goal of this game is to stick as many Post It notes on your face as you can in one minute. This is harder than it looks. Facial hair and oily faces don’t help the sticking factor here. Make sure that everyone is adding only one Post It at a time.

To Win: Record how many Post It notes each player was able to put on their face and record it on the scorecard. The person with the most gets 5 points, second place gets 3 points, and third place gets 1. If there are more than 3 players, the rest will receive 0 points.

Game 2: Cookie Face

Supplies: One cookie per player

Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

The goal of this game is to try and move a cookie from your forehead into your mouth without using your hands at all. You have one minute to try and do this. This was so hard! The timer stops when the person gets the cookie in their mouth.

To Win: Record the time left on the clock after the person gets the cookie in their mouth. In this case, the person with the most time left wins because they did it in the fastest time and earned 5 points, 3 points would be the second most time left and 1 point would be the third most time left. No one in our house was able to do it. We decided since it was a flop, we all got 0 points for the round. We’re a tough crowd and very competitive!

Game 3: Cup Pyramid

Supplies: 28 Solo cups

Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

Each player has to make a pyramid using 28 Solo cups with a base of 7 cups and then working up to 1 cup at the top. Set the timer and stop the clock when the player has finished making the pyramid.

To Win:  Record the time left on the clock after the person completes the pyramid. In this case, just like the previous game, the person with the most time left wins because they did it in the fastest time and earned 5 points, 3 points would be the second most time left and 1 point would be the third most time left.

Game 4: Yank the Paper

Supplies: 4 Solo cups (I used some from the previous game) and 3 pieces of copy or loose-leaf paper

Before starting the time, place a Solo cup upside down on the counter and top it with a sheet of paper. Add another cup on top of the paper. Add another sheet of paper on top of that. Continue until you have used all your supplies. The goal of the game is to yank the paper from in between the cups and have the cups stack onto one another. You have one minute to do it.

Yank the Paper Game

To Win: Record the time left on the clock after the person completes the task. In this case, the person with the most time left wins because they did it in the fastest time and earned 5 points, 3 points would be the second most time left and 1 point would be the third most time left. If no one is able to do it, you can also assign points for getting the furthest along. Just like the cookie game, none of us were able to stack even one cup so we gave ourselves all zeros.

Game 5: Cotton Ball Game

Supplies: Cotton Balls, 2 bowls, and a serving spoon

Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

Each player will have one minute to transfer cotton balls from one bowl placed on their lap or counter to an empty bowl on their head using a serving spoon. When the timer stops, count and record how many cotton balls each player successfully transferred into the bowl on their head and add the number to the scorecard.

To Win: The person who transferred the most cotton balls receives 5 points, the second most receives 3 points and the third most receives 1. Everyone else receives zero.

Game 6: Suck It Up

Supplies: Plastic beads, 2 bowls, and straws

Place a good amount of plastic beads in one of the serving bowls. Sucking into a straw, transfer as many beads as possible into the other bowl in one minute. When the timer stops, count and record how many beads each player successfully transferred into the bowl and place the number on the scorecard.

To Win: The person who transferred the most plastic beads receives 5 points, the second most receives 3 points and the third most receives 1. Everyone else receives zero.

Game 7: Pencil Elevator

Supplies: Pencil, string, and Cheerios/Fruit Loops/Smarties (any of these would work) *Don’t use Skittles!

Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

To play, you need to tie a long amount of string to both ends of your pencil. Each player has to wrap the string around their ears and have the pencil sit at their chest level. When the timer starts, the player has to transfer four Cheerios/Fruit Loops/Smarties into their mouth by pulling on the strings behind their ears to raise the pencil.

This game was an absolute bust for us because I made the mistake of trying to use Skittles. Skittles are curved and didn’t sit flat on the pencil. Bummer!!

Pencil Elevator Game

To Win: Record the time left on the clock after the person completes the task. In this case, the person with the most time left wins because they did it in the fastest time and earned 5 points, 3 points would be the second most time left and 1 point would be the third most time left. If no one is able to do it, you can also assign points for getting the furthest along.

Game 8: Moving Stack

Supplies: 28 Solo cups

Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

I’ve seen this done two ways before. One way is you have 27 cups of one color cup and 1 of a different color. The individual cup of a different color starts at the top of the stack and the goal is to bring each cup from the bottom (one at a time) and continuously stack them until you get back to the first cup you started with. The timer stops at that moment.

Because all 28 of our cups were the same color, we used a black permanent marker to trace a line around the perimeter of the cup on the top of the stack to identify it. We did the same process I previously mentioned and knew to stop the timer when the permanent marker cup was back at the top.

To Win: Record the time left on the clock after the person completes the task. In this case, the person with the most time left wins because they did it in the fastest time and earned 5 points, 3 points would be the second most time left and 1 point would be the third most time left.

Game 9: Chopstick Fun

Supplies: 2 bowls, chopsticks, and mini marshmallows

Place a good amount of mini marshmallows in one of the serving bowls. Using chopsticks, transfer as many marshmallows as possible into the other bowl in one minute. When the timer stops, count and record how many marshmallows each player successfully transferred into the bowl and place the number on the scorecard.

To Win: The person who transferred the most mini marshmallows receives 5 points, the second most receives 3 points and the third most receives 1. Everyone else receives zero.

Game 10: Beaded Bracelet

Supplies: Plastic beads and pipe cleaners

Minute To Win It Games for Teenagers

Using only one hand, see how many beads you can add onto a pipe cleaner in one minute. When the timer stops, count and record how many beads each player successfully transferred onto the pipe cleaner and place it on the scorecard.

Beaded Bracelet

To Win: The person who transferred the most plastic beads onto the pipe cleaner receives 5 points, the second most receives 3 points and the third most receives 1. Everyone else receives zero.

From start to finish, it took the three of us about 1 hour to complete all 10 games. This included setting up and breaking down each game as we went from one to the next. Patrick came in first, Zach came in second and I was in last place…boo!

  2. I love your idea for “Family Time.” I’ve been a BIG believer in family time for as long as I can remember–we did it with our kids every week–and it pays off big rewards! Love these game ideas–fabulous! I especially love the pyramid with the cups–have you ever seen Sports Stacking Cups? A bit similar but not quite–but both look super fun! Fabulous ideas–thanks for another great blog!

    1. I have heard of stacking cups! And I’ve seen it on your blog too. That was actually one of the “easier” games we did but my pyramid fell at the last minute…boo!
