Have you created a Word of the Year before? If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, the process of picking a word of the year is a tradition every January of choosing one single word to focus and reflect on each day, all year long. It’s so much fun!
I’m going on year four of having a word of the year and I can honestly say I love it! I love it so much in fact that I created an entire Word of the Year post to help others create words of their own. I actually use my own post every year to help myself and my family walk through the word of the year picking process. It’s truly a godsend!
Stopping after finding your word of the year would be fine well and dandy, but I like to take things a step further and really hone in on that word of the year. To do so, I created my word of the year template that encourages you to take your chosen word and apply it to all areas of your life including relationships, family, friends, and even finances.
I hate to sound cheesy but “This is where the magic happens!”. This part really makes you think hard and long about how you’re going to crush your word in the upcoming year. It’s inspiring and motivating and you walk away from filling out this word of the year template feeling like you can conquer the world.
But then reality hits…You get busy, you lose focus, and before you know it you’re back in January ready to pick another Word of the Year. Time sure has a way of flying by, doesn’t it?
In full transparency, I am a prime example of someone who makes huge goals and aspirations in January only to fall off the wagon shortly after. Knowing this about myself, I desperately rack my own brain looking for ways to counteract this. When I find things that work for me, I turn right around and share them here in hopes of helping others. It’s the teacher in me!
Monthly Goal Tracker for Your Word of the Year
In hopes of staying on target with my word for the entire year this time, I came up with a Monthly Goal Tracker to use as a way to reflect at the end of every month. This gives you 12 opportunities to check-in with yourself and see how well you are attacking your word of the year!
These monthly reflections allow you to make adjustments as needed if you’re not seeing the results you want. On the flip side, if you are seeing results, this helps you see what is working. From there, you can build on that and see even more growth. You can add your highs and lows, as well as ways to improve or build in the following section of the template.
This part of the template goes hand in hand with my Word of the Year template. That template has you apply your chosen word of the year to eight areas of your life. The areas are listed on the circle tracker.
The goal of this circle tracker is to rate how well you feel you’ve been doing in that particular month in each specific area. The rating is from 1 to 5, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. Grab colored pencils and shade in your score for each of the 8 areas. Start from the center of the circle and work your way out!
Once you’re done with your highs and lows and circle tracker, rate your overall score for the month. You’ll want to give yourself a score from 1 to 10 on the thermometer by coloring in the corresponding amount of sections. This should be pretty easy to come up with after doing all that reflection in the other two sections.
You’ll go through this process at the end of each and every month of the year to ensure smooth sailing with your word of the year. If you feel the need for more accountability, feel free to comment below and I’ll help you stay on track with your word. We can work on it together! I always do better when I know someone is watching. Are you the same way?
We all fall off track at times. This Monthly Goal Tracker for your Word of the Year is just a way to help assure we remember our goals and that we are striving to achieve them. The extra monthly reflections will help us stay on target all year long. We’ve got this. Here’s to achieving our goals this year!

Right?! I totally need this to stay on track and accountable!
This is such an incredible idea, Tiffany! I’ve told my kids about it and we all want to make 2021 better than 2020–and this is a great start! Thank you! It’s amazing to me the simple goals that have the greatest influence in our lives–and starting with a “word” for the year will keep us all on track–in good times and bad. Thanks for another great post!
You’re so welcome, Sharlene. I love making a word of the Year and now tracking it can be even easier. Good luck picking yours!
