Looking for a unique Father’s Day gift idea to surprise that special dad in your life? You should definitely consider a deep sea fishing trip! This is the best Father’s Day gift idea for the man who has everything. Celebrate dad and all he does this Father’s Day with this one of a kind experience!
With Mother’s Day now behind us, it’s time to start thinking about dad and how to celebrate him this year for Father’s Day. Last year, Zach and I got creative and came up with a really unique Father’s Day gift idea to surprise Patrick with. It was a huge success and won us some pretty big brownie points. As you’ll hear below, surprising Patrick isn’t the easiest task in the world. Curious what our unique Father’s Day gift idea was? A deep sea fishing trip!
I first want to start off by saying how much I love and appreciate my husband, Patrick. The man literally works his butt off day in and day out to provide for our family. This guy is a hustler! It’s because of him I am able to even be sitting here writing to you today and not having to worry about juggling both blogging and teaching at the same time. He took on all the financial responsibilities so I could do what I love and spend more time being a mom to Zach in his final four years of school before he heads off to college. If you’re interested in learning more about our backstory, we have been together since we’re 18, check out my very first post ever published on my website, here.
Now with all the mushy stuff out of the way, I can get to the stuff you’re really interested in hearing. Like the fact that Patrick is the hardest person in the world to buy a gift for, ever! He’s the guy that if he sees something he likes he’ll just buy it right there and then. He does this even if it’s two days before Christmas and he knows you probably already bought it for him as a gift…Then you have to tell him, “No, don’t buy that! I got it for you as a Christmas gift.” Now your main Christmas surprise is ruined and you’re scrambling the day before the holiday trying to come up with a gift. Yep, he’s that guy! You can imagine how much this drives me crazy.
Zach and I have had this conversation plenty of times and we both think that Patrick gets enjoyment out of watching us go crazy trying to find the perfect gift for him. It’s some weird sickness he must have that makes him want to see us scrambling around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to gift him with something original. He’s lucky we love him or he’d be getting coal for every single holiday and celebration. Hahahaha!
When you have a husband or father like Patrick, waiting until the last minute to buy him a gift is a huge no-no. Procrastinating doesn’t work when your gift-giving goal is to find something unique and different. I like to start thinking about ideas well in advance. I even find myself “taking mental notes” whenever I hear Patrick mention something he likes. My radars are always on and listening for the slightest piece of information I can use for future gift ideas. Why he makes this so hard for us, I have no idea!
Those radars I just mentioned got triggered one day last year while we were on our friend’s boat. We took a day trip to Merritt Island for a Sunday Funday to enjoy the ocean and the sizzling Florida sun. A few days before we went, we all took a trip to Bass Pro Shop to get fishing gear that was suitable for the ocean. We fish all the time on our lake, you can see us in our Lake Life State of Mind here, but our poles and bait aren’t good for the ocean. Of course “The Boys” were going to want to fish so we had to be prepared with all the proper fishing gear.
And fishing they did! They tried their very best but only caught one fish. They chalked it up to not really knowing the area and what fishing supplies would work best. And then Patrick said it, “We definitely need to do a fishing trip one day” I took mental note of the comment and kept it in my arsenal of gift ideas knowing that Father’s Day was right around the corner.
A few weeks later I started doing some research and ended up finding the perfect company to charter a deep sea fishing trip for Patrick. I was rather impressed with myself for coming up with such a unique Father’s Day gift idea. Zach and I may or may not have given one another a huge pat on the back for this one!
Since we didn’t really have anything to wrap, we came up with a cute handmade gift to present to Patrick. It cracks me up when I look at it because it totally looks like a 5-year-old made it when in fact it was me and Zach…who was 14 at the time!
Here’s what you need to make your own:
- Fish template (Available in my free resource library. Snag the password by filling out the form at the bottom of the post.)
- Clear page protector (optional)
Simply download the free fish template and print it on a piece of cardstock. Using markers or crayons, draw a hook coming out of the mouth of the fish. Cut a piece of string and glue it down on the cardstock to look as if it’s fishing line attached to the hook. Decorate the page using markers or crayons and make sure to add your message and the details of the deep sea fishing trip. We chose to place it in a clear page protector before putting it in a gift bag.
Thinking this might be a good idea for the special man in your family?!?!
Things I learned after booking a Deep Sea Fishing Trip you might find useful:
It’s very expensive! I’m talking in the $700 range for a ½ day fishing trip and $900 for a full day. You will find cheaper companies out there but for something like this, you’ll want a reputable company with a ton of positive reviews. Can you imagine getting stuck in the middle of the ocean?? No thank you!
To offset the cost, think about going in with a couple of other moms and making it a group gift. The price is the same regardless if one person goes or the boat is full. You are paying for the rental of the boat, not the number of people. The boat we rented for Patrick held 7 people along with the Captain. “The Boys” went and then Patrick was able to pick 5 additional friends to join along.
A ½ day fishing trip is more than enough. “The Boys” caught a ton of fish and everyone went home with gallon-sized bags filled with the fish filets. The ½ day morning trip is ideal because it starts very early in the morning and is done by noon allowing you to spare yourself from the scorching sun.
Make sure that anyone who is prone to sickness takes Dramamine or Bonine. Of course, Patrick was the one with his head over the boat multiple times throughout the trip. Apparently, he was a trooper though and still had a blast!
Pack a cooler with sandwiches, snacks and drinks to enjoy while on the boat. You will need to find out the rules with your actual charter boat company, but ours allowed us to pack anything we wanted including alcoholic beverages.
Make sure to wear hats, sunglasses and a ton of sunscreen!
Additional tips: I have said this so many times before, but I feel the need to say it again. We are so very fortunate to live in the state of Florida. In this case, in particular, we are at an advantage with renting a deep sea fishing charter because we are surrounded by water on three sides…a peninsula!
If you are nowhere near an ocean, no sweat! There are many other bodies of water you can fish in including rivers and lakes. I know that some of the larger lakes in my area have tour boats and fishing charters that go out on a daily basis. These are also substantially cheaper options. Google “Fishing trips nearby” and see your options.
And with that, the crowd goes wild! Everyone for miles can’t help but jump for joy that Zach and I actually pulled off a great surprise for Patrick. The fat lady is even singing for us. But it’s short-lived! Here’s the problem, how will we ever beat this unique Father’s Day gift idea in the future? Wish us luck!
